That sounds easy, or at least you made it sound easy. :)

I don't have Photoshop but something close to it and this really helps as well. Thanks for sharing this. :D

Great tutorial! I never knew about that extraction filter...I always outline everything tediously with the pen tool XD This seems so much easier!

Well, you asked for suggestions. You said your technique is a quick way to extract something from the background. But manually editing a layer mask applied on fuzzy hair is not so quick in my opinion (you also didn't include that active step into your tutorial, you stopped at the point where the actual work would have started). There is another technique to extract hair from a plain background, quicker and more accurate: working with channels.

Working with channels is a more advanced method of Photoshopping. One that I'm not a huge fan of. I dont personally like that many steps. I dont have the patience for it. But I have heard of it and tried it. I try to keep things simple.

I did this tut as a quick informative tut on the tool. I'm not saying that its the best method. Just another way to go about it. Its another tool in photoshop. Its a matter of preference.

As for quick, quick-er, than selecting with a selection tool such as the magnet, or polygonal tool.

I don't see your point. Creating a channel mask is easy and doesn't require very many steps. Maybe we are not talking about the same thing.

my point is this tutorial was made to highlight the background extract feature in photoshop. The purpose is to provide people with another option, and tool in there photoshop arsenal.

If you have a bright background and dark hair there are some tricks ;)
When you have the layers like on 0:22 in the tutorial, so you have two times the Photo and below the background.
Now fill the Background with the new Background you want.
Then set the layer in the Middle in the mode Multiply.
And finally you make a Mask on the Top layer and demask the old background. You will see that you can draw over the hair and just the old background will disappear!

I have cs 3 on a mac, obviously, Im rocking a very old and very picky waccom tablet. I'm going to have to invest in a new one. They go for about 90 bucks, I have a big tablet but I dont hardly use the size I think I'll down grade to a smaller one when this finally dies.

That makes sense then.
I am running Cs2 on an old IBM thinkpad with Windows 2k so everything looks way different to me XD

haha I didn't think it was that complicated till I wrote out the instructions down. :D
I tried to throw together some tutorials for uber basic photoshop but my time limit is like three minutes on this free share program I have. I simply dont have the funds to purchase the good program for this. :-/ At least right now. Im trying to think of another way around it, we'll see what I can come up with

ya dont be cheap. LOL. I dont have a job either. also i cant find any freebie for jing. if its strictly web based then it will be hard to do. if the program installs on your computer then there is a chance. by the way i seen your gallery yesterday and see that you have some prints for sale. does that work? i mean do people buy prints? i need money too and ill enable the print thing if i see that its worth it.
